Very small, but the food is amazing and I know the chef from ages back. He's a crotchety old bastard, but he's charming when he wants to be, and his Coquilles Saint-Jacques is brilliant.

Dear Pansy,

I've tried to write this note at least twenty times now, and managed to convince myself every single time that it's a bad idea, or I'm mad, or you'll laugh at me for being such an idiot. Well, perhaps the latter you should, given the way I'm fumbling about here. I suppose I'm hoping you'll think it's a charming Gryffindor quirk.

I know I'm a Weasley and you're a Parkinson and never the the twain should meet lest the world go spinning off its axis into oblivion, but, well, we already did that, right? And the world's still here. And I suppose I'm hoping that if Harry and Draco can get past seven years of loathing each other without the space-time continuum collapsing on itself, and if Elle and my brother Charlie can sort through the whole Gryffindor and Slytherin conundrum, then maybe you wouldn't object to me taking you to dinner one night this week?

I don't really want to be writing this, but I have to, I guess, because it's my fault, really. I didn't mean to take Viktor's key; I didn't even know it was his--I just found it lying outside on the walk in front of the clubhouse and I meant to ask about to see whose it was, but with the match today I forgot.

So he hurt his hand trying to open his changing room, and McKendrick thought he'd be fine flying with it. She even gave him a potion, but for some reason it didn't work, maybe there was iron in the wound, she thinks, that she didn't get out from the lock.

But he fell. He couldn't hold on to his broom, and when he took a dive for the Snitch, he fell fifty feet before anyone could cast a Levitation Charm. They just took him to St Mungo's. I'm on my way there as soon as I can, but I wanted to let you know immediately.

I'm sorry, Ron. I'm so sorry.

Merlin's Flash Knickers, what was I THINKING, not having sex for so long?

The weekend... ahhhhhh. It was fabulous. I am knackered beyond belief. I was an Inferius on ward today (that's why they train you in altered states, I suppose). I can hardly believe I made it through the day.

Talked to some people since we had lunch and yeah, it's pretty lean in Britain for what you want. I heard about Sutton Hoo, and if they can't take you on as a curse breaker, I don't see one of the other sites managing. Bit outside your areas of expertise, too, but that's irrelevant if all they've got are archivist and cataloging positions. The small digs keep the same half dozen people for decades, hard breaking in there.

Are you sure you're not willing to look outside Albion's rather circumscribed shores? You know as well as I do that they'd take you back at Luxor HQ in a heartbeat. And if you'd asked about this in early August, I could have put you on to something perfect for you at Lattara but they've hired since. But there's work out there for you if you're willing to go to it.

Let me know how far afield you're willing to go to get back into the field and I'll see what I can find.

Your Grandmum sends her love, and suggests that you might speak to the previous Head of Ravenclaw regarding the proper handling of the students. One would assume that whoever had the post must have done decently well at it.

I'm so sorry I couldn't write to you yesterday but the Headmistress is very serious about curfew and she's already given out lots of detentions. I couldn't get to the Owlery in time. I don't think she likes me very much, and Professor Sprout isn't here anymore. I don't know what's going on. Nothing's the same at all and I miss you so much.

Klara and Jacek aren't back either. I'm worried about them, but maybe they'll be at Durmstrang? I know they used to go there and didn't like it either. But if you're all there maybe you can spend time with them there and it'll be better. Not like here, but better. I hope it's better. Don't hate your parents, please? Professor Snape's your family, he's supposed to come first. And it's so different here, it's not nearly as much fun and everyone's surprised. Well, not the firsties, but they don't know what to think anyway.

All the professors are new except Binns and that one no one ever sees outside his classroom, you know the Ancient Runes professor. I don't know, the new ones look all right, but we haven't had any classes yet, they make us copy out lines in the Great Hall every day from the new rule book. It doesn't make any sense, there's a rule against everything, even things I've never wanted to do, and it's dreadfully dull but anyone who complains has detention.

I wish Headmaster Snape was still Headmaster and everything was just the same. It was going to be so lovely seeing you every day and all of us together. But I promise to write as often as I can too, and I'll think of you every day. We'll make the best of it, all right? And we'll think of something. I have to post this or I'll miss curfew.

I reckon by now you know I didn't meet you at the train today. I'm sorry. I wanted to, and I thought Dai and Dad were going to let me come because Dad didn't want to interrupt my schooling, but Dai won't let me anywhere near Hogwarts now they've sacked Kako Severus. We argued a lot about that today. I didn't win. Sometimes I hate my parents. They don't understand.

I'm starting term at Durmstrang again on Thursday. Dai and I are going for my robes tomorrow. I don't want to go to Durmstrang. I hated it last time. Hogwarts is so much better, and you're there.

Douglas says he can't go back either. I don't want you to be alone, Lainey. I miss you. I'll write every week, okay? More, if they let me. They watch how many owls we use if we don't have one of our own. Maybe I'll talk Dai into buying me one tomorrow.

This isn't fair. I hate them for sacking Kako Severus. They've ruined everything.

It's not like you had to go to school. I hate it! The uniform is horrible; I have to wear a blazer, and no one lets me get away with my tie being loose, not to mention the jumper. And I'm still responsible for all the work I miss when we go to the Ministry in the morning to get my waiver for performing underage magic. And the Sixth Formers all either hate me or are trying to be nice since they either hate or like Aunt Beth which means that the Fifth Formers are all my mortal enemies or something because they think I'm a favourite and I'm just "It's the third day of classes!" and I'd like to go tell them all to fuck off and that I'm a wizard and don't need them, but I don't think that anyone would look too kindly on that, especially Aunt Beth.

Are you sure that I have to go? Can't I just be entirely homeschooled? I don't need maths and literature and all the other stupid things they're making me do, like play squash!

This is to confirm the substance of a conversation between me and Dolores Umbridge this morning. I have resigned my post as Chief Librarian of Hogwarts School. Pending the appointment of another Chief Librarian, the library has been warded closed to all excepting the elves who have already been trained in archival and curatorial specializations. Any new putative librarian will, of course, have to have similar training, to a level that the library elves (as well as the warding charms on the library itself) find satisfactory. Until such a person accepts the post, the library will remain locked.
